Parents file lawsuit in drag racing fatality

<p>The parents of a Snellville teen killed in a crash involving two alleged drag racers have filed a $3.5 million lawsuit against them.</p><p>Matthew Lane, 17, was killed in February 2003 when the car he was riding in was struck by another car.</p><p>Authorities say Paul Copeland, 18, and Stephen Carter, 19, were drag racing when Copeland's car struck the vehicle Lane was in as it turned onto a road.</p><p>In the lawsuit, which was filed Monday in Gwinnett County, Randy and Diana Lane seek $3.5 million in damages from Carter and Copeland. The parents also want repayment of their funeral, medical and legal expenses.</p><p>Also named in the lawsuit is Amanda Anderson, who was driving the car Lane was in. The suit says she failed to keep proper lookout when she turned onto the road and failed to drive defensively by yielding to oncoming traffic. The suit also names the teens' legal guardians.</p><p>Carter and Copeland have been charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, racing and reckless driving. Carter is also charged with hit and run for leaving the scene of the accident. Jury selection for their trial is scheduled to begin June 2.</p><p>Anderson, though named in the lawsuit, was never charged with criminal wrongdoing.</p><p>___</p><p>Information from: Gwinnett Daily Post</p>
