Hall GOP calls for ban on gay marriage

By by Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - Saying ¡§marriage has in all times and places been between man and woman,¡¨ Hall County Republicans have approved a resolution backing proposed amendments the U.S. and Georgia constitutions banning gay marriage.

Delegates to the party¡¦s annual convention over the weekend also approved a resolution on immigration. It calls on the President and Congress to ¡§dedicate themselves to regaining control of America¡¦s borders.¡¨

"We were heard on two issues of grave concern here and elsewhere," said Joe Cwik, chair of the HCRP. "Marriage is not a mere social convention of time and place. It is a natural and enduring relationship that has been the foundation of civilization everywhere and in all times-whatever the culture, whatever the family structure."

On immigration, Cwik said, "It used to be that our immigration system benefited immigrants and the communities where they settled; that system is broken, gone, and we need to restore it." The growth in the illegal population is straining public services, and therefore costing local taxpayers, he said.

"We're well aware this is a complex and highly sensitive issue,"¨ Cwik said "None of us here expect simple answers, but we do expect a serious search for effective answers."

The immigration resolution, entitled, "Restoring a Mutually Beneficially Immigration System," asks Congress to begin working to, among other things:

*an effective registration system for immigrants.
*a trustworthy worker identification system,
*a workable policy for matching immigrant workers with available jobs.

Two vacancies on the executive committee were filled; Joe Hoopaugh, as vice chair of finance, and Tack Cornelius, vice chair of communications and public affairs.

Delegates were elected to the 10th district Republican Convention to be held April 3 in Rock Spring, Ga. There delegates will be elected to the state convention in Columbus, then to the national convention in New York.
