MACON - Randolph-Clay won its first state championship since 1986, getting a combined 49 points from Lancie Cannon and Chris Jackson, beating Carver-Atlanta 80-67 and finishing a perfect season in the Class AA state championship on Saturday.
Cannon scored 30 and Jackson 19, and the biggest damage was done in the first half, when the Red Devils (32-0) blew out to a big lead and remained in control the rest of the way.
They led by as many as 22 points on several occasions, and never saw their lead trimmed to single digits.
``We never thought about an undefeated season,'' said Randolph-Clay coach Joe Williams. ``We just tried to take it one game at a time. We went and we played, and lo and behold, here we are.''
Shamaine Dukes and Rashaad Lewis scored 10 each for the Red Devils, who won two championships in the 1980s and last appeared in a state final in 1999. The championship-game win was their only playoff game closer than 15 points.
Carver (28-5) got 30 points from Javaris Bradford. Taj McCullough, who sparked the Panthers' semifinal win with a big third quarter, scored 15 and Gianni Crouch added 14.
