Winds prompt 'wildfire alert'

By by Ken Stanford
UNDATED - Gusty winds diminished overnight, but are expected to return Tuesday afternoon, and the Georgia Forestry Commission has issued a "wildfire alert" for most of the state for the rest of the week.

The commission says there were at least 130 wildfires in the state Sunday that burned more than 1,200 acres; most were caused by controlled burns that got out of control.

Another wind advisory has been posted for Gainesville and the rest of northeast Georgia - effective from 2:00 Tuesday afternon to 4:00 Wednesday morning. Most of north and central Georgia are included.

The top wind gust recorded in Gainesville Monday: 38 mph.
