Gas prices hit record highs in Georgia

By By Ken Stanford
ATLANTA - The AAA Auto Club South says gasoline prices averaging a $1.59 a gallon are the highest ever recorded in Georgia.

The statewide average is 14 cents lower than the national average of a $1.74 per gallon.

That appears to be in line with prices around Gainesville, where prices range from around $1.55 to $1.62.

That nationwide average is about a penny shy of the highest price since the government began collecting data.

High prices for crude oil, strong demand and low commercial inventories have driven up the costs. Analysts expect those same trends to be in place this summer, the peak driving season.

But AAA says no one seems to be changing travel plans because of higher gas prices.
