GAINESVILLE - A zoning ordinance for high voltage transmission lines was approved by the Hall County Commission Thursday.
The vote was taken just two weeks after a public hearing on the matter at which the two sides squared off over the issue.
At that time, attorney John Smith, representing Georgia Power, pleaded the utility's case, saying the utility believes the ordinance is unconstitutional.
The ordiance grew out of concerns from homeowners in northern Hall County over plans by Georgia Power to install an 18-mile high-voltage line between Lula and Dahlonega.
Among those opposing the line was Lynn Lathem of Murrayville, Chairman of the Hall-Lumpkin Property Owners Association, who said at that meeting two weeks ago she wants county zoning to control location of transmission lines.
"Why do we want these ordinances?" Lathem asked. "To put this in perspective, this line is nearly a football field wide and is 18 miles long."
