Lady Elephants ready to defend title

By By Jeff Hart
GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville girls basketball team could not be hotter than they are as the prepare for Friday's Class AAA first round playoff game against Carrollton at Gainesville High School.

The Lady Elephants (24-3) have won 14 straight and are coming off an unprecedented fourth-straight Region 7-AAA title. They are looking for their second straight state title and third in the last four years.

Listening to fellow region coaches, it may be a tournament to decide second place for everyone else.

"I don't think I've ever seen them play better defense," Flowery Branch coach Angela Middleton said after Gainesville dismantled her Lady Falcons in a 45-30 win in the region semifinals. "I don't know how anyone could beat them if they play like that in the (state) tournament."

Fannin County found out the next night in the region finals. Gainesville held Fannin to just 9 points over a 20 minute stretch en route to a 57-30 blowout win.

"We didn't run our offense very well, but that had a lot to do with their defense. It was unbelievable," Fannin coach johnny Farmer said after that game. "That was probably the best defense we've ever seen from them over the years."

What's even more remarkable is that the Lady Elephants feature one of the top five offensive players in the country in Tasha Humphrey (who has already verbally committed to go Georgia) plus up-and-coming sophomore Kita Waller and junior Meg Henson.

"You know they can score in bunches and in a hurry. You try to limit the runs they have. But when you can't even get a shot off, it's tough to hold them back," Farmer said.
