JONESBORO - Despite starting four freshmen, the Avondale Lady Blue Devils played like veterans when it mattered most against Johnson in the second round of the Class AAA state tournament Friday night at Mt. Zion High School.
Freshman Angelica Meeling hit a 3-pointer with 20 seconds left and then two free throws with 7 seconds left to give Avondale a 70-66 win.
The Lady Blue Devils advanced to play Fannin County Monday night in the Elite Eight. Fannin upset Westminster 42-37 Friday night to advance.
Johnson (22-8) led most of the second half after using a 14-1 run to take a 54-48 at the end of the third quarter.
The Johnson run followed an Avondale 11-2 run to give the Lady Devils a 47-40 lead.
Avondale won the game at the free throw line hitting 23-of-33 for the game. johnson was just 13-of-26 and missed five free throws in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Knights were denied their first Elite Eight appearnce since 1996.
Brooke Baker finished with 13 points and 4 rebounds for Johnson. Whitney Randolph scored 15 and had 7 rebounds for the Lady Knights.
Meeling finished with 20 points and Tamisha Lewis had 18 for Avondale.
