BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) Zabian Dowdell scored 17 points 10 in the last seven minutes as Virginia Tech broke open a tight game and defeated Morgan State 67-54 Monday night.<br>

Carlos Dixon had 12 points and grabbed eight boards for the Hokies (6-4).<br>

Center Aaron Andrews led the Bears (3-7) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Grant and Sam Brand each added 10 points.<br>

Dowdell assisted in Allen Calloway's dunk that gave the Hokies their largest lead 62-47 with 3:24 to play.<br>

Virginia Tech opened a double-digit lead seven minutes into the second half when Wynton Witherspoon's free throw made it 50-38, but the Bears came back with a seven-point run.<br>

The game was close for much of the first half, with five ties and six lead changes in the first 18 minutes.<br>

The Hokies took their largest lead of the half, 36-28, when Dixon hit a layup. Andrews trimmed the lead to 36-30 as the teams headed to the locker room.<br>

The Hokies shot 48 percent to 35 percent for the Bears.<br>

Hokies forward Coleman Collins scored eight points in his first action in more than two weeks following surgery.
