No. 6 Texas Rallies Past Kansas, 27-23

By
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Vince Young scored on an 18-yard touchdown run with 4:11 left and threw a 22-yard TD pass to Tony Jeffrey with 11 seconds remaining to rally No. 6 Texas past Kansas 27-23 Saturday.

Kansas, a 22-point underdog, took a 23-13 lead with 7:41 left after a 1-yard touchdown pass from Brian Luke to Lyonel Anderson. But the Jayhawks (3-7, 1-6 Big 12) were denied their biggest victory in nearly a decade by the play of Young.

On the ensuing drive for Texas (9-1, 6-1), Young scrambled for 22 yards on a fourth-and-18 and then completed the 87-yard drive with his 18-yard scoring run.

After forcing Kansas to punt, Young connected with Jeffery for the winning touchdown.

The win would have been biggest for the Jayhawks since they beat No. 4 Colorado 40-24 in 1995.

It was the second come-from-behind effort in two weeks for Texas, which rallied from a 35-7 deficit to beat Oklahoma State 56-35 in the biggest comeback in school history.

Young finished 22-of-40 for 289 yards and added 114 yards on the ground. Cedric Benson, the Big 12's leading rusher, had 161 yards on 28 carries and set an NCAA record with his 36th game with a touchdown when he went in from 18 yards out in the second quarter.

Fourth-string quarterback Brian Luke came into the game in the third quarter when starter John Nielsen was hurt, the third Kansas quarterback in three weeks to go down with an injury. Luke finished 14-for-25 for 225 yards and one touchdown. His 73-yard completion to Mark Simmons set up the final touchdown.

The Longhorns had averaged almost 42 points in four lopsided wins since getting shut out by No. 2 Oklahoma. But they were clinging to a 13-9 lead when Kansas took over on the Texas 39 following a 21-yard punt.

On second-and-10 from the 22, Luke hit Charles Gordon for 21 yards to the 1, setting up a scoring run by Austine Nwabuisi and giving the Jayhawks a 16-13 lead with 11:42 to play.

After a Texas punt, Luke connected with Mark Simmons on third and short and Simmons went 73 yards to the 1. Luke then threw a touchdown pass to Anderson on the next play.

Kansas kicker Johnny Beck was 3-for-4 on field-goal attempts in the first half. His 36-yarder in the first quarter followed Kevin Kane's interception and 27-yard return of Young's pass.

In the first quarter, the underdog Jayhawks tried a fake punt and a halfback option pass and benefited from an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against Texas coach Mack Brown, who went onto the field and accidentally ran into an official.
