Lowndes rolls over defending AAAAA champ Camden County

By
ATLANTA - Lynn Williams ran for 174 yards and two touchdowns and Lowndes easily handled defending champion Camden County 30-0 in the Class AAAAA state semifinal Saturday night.

Lowndes, who won the Class AAAA title in 1999, will face Parkview, a 28-0 winner over Walton, in the championship game next week. The Vikings (14-0) also ended Camden County's 28-game winning streak.

Williams, who had 17 carries, scored on a 9-yard run, which earlier on the drive was highlighted by a 46-yard pass from Doug Belk to B.J. Wright. Belk completed 5-of-7 passes for 91 yards.

On a questionable call by the referees in the second quarter, it seemed that Lowndes returner Michael Cash botched a punt and Camden County recovered the fumble on the Vikings' 1-yard line. But the officials overruled the call saying the first person to touch the ball was a player from Camden County at the 10-yard line and Lowndes attained possession at that spot.

On Camden County's next turn, quarterback Ben Greer inadvertently fumbled just before attempting a pass and the Vikings recovered the ball. In result of the turnover, Williams scored on a 3-yard run.

Then just before halftime, the Wildcat defense was called for a late hit out of bounds, which granted Lowndes 15 yards. On the next play, Williams broke for a 64-yard gain, capped by a 20-yard field goal by Kurtis Schmidt to give Lowndes a 17-0 lead.

Marion Jones, who had 67 yards on 12 attempts, scored on a 3-yard run in the third for Lowndes. Octavlues Everett added 55 yards on the ground.

Wildcats (13-1) running back Brandon West, who had more than 140 total yards and three touchdowns last week, was held to 23 yards on 11 carries.
