Bulldogs No. 10 in first BCS standings of season

By The Associated Press

The Georgia Bulldogs were No. 10 Monday in the first Bowl Championship Series standings of the season, facing an uphill climb to reach the national title game.

Southern California, No. 1 in both The Associated Press media rankings and the coaches' poll, was a clear choice for No. 1. Surprisingly, Miami edged out Oklahoma for the second spot.

Farther back is Georgia (5-1, 3-1 Southeastern Conference), which hurt its chances of reaching the Orange Bowl by losing to Tennessee.

The Bulldogs are ranked sixth by the coaches and 10th by the AP, but they only placed 14th in the computer rankings.

"It is a little frustrating, I guess, to see us that low," quarterback D.J. Shockley said. "We need to keeping winning so that our rankings go up. A lot can happen in the next few weeks. We need to keep winning and things will take care of themselves."

The BCS is using a new, simplified formula this season. The AP and coaches' polls each count for one-third of a team's total score, while the other third is made up of a compilation of six computer rankings.

Georgia placed anywhere from 10th to 19th in the computer polls.

"Our ranking is maybe a little harsh, but we expected it," offensive guard Max Jean-Gilles said. "We can't worry about rankings. We need to take care of our own business."

The Bulldogs' computer ranking was probably hurt by having played only one road game this season. The Bulldogs play their next four games away from home.

"Several of them use a home-and-away factor in their formula, so I think it has some influence," said BCS coordinator and Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg.

In the BCS standings, Oklahoma was followed by Auburn, Florida State, Wisconsin, Utah, California and Tennessee.

The top two teams will meet in the Orange Bowl for the BCS championship on Jan. 4.

"We don't worry about the BCS," defensive end David Pollack said. "The only thing that we can control is winning ballgames. I think we should be ranked higher, but there is a lot of football left. There is time to move up in the rankings."

Coach Mark Richt is taking a similar approach.

"I'd be interested to see where we are and where we might end up if we continue to win," he said. "But it's not that big a deal right now."
