Randolph, Mauk continue splitting time for Demon Deacons

By
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe has two quarterbacks for one spot under center. But the coach said he doesn't look at having two quality signal-callers as a problem.

``I look at it as a luxury, but I'm not sure our quarterbacks would look at it as a luxury,'' Grobe said Tuesday, three days after his Demon Deacons lost a 27-21 overtime game at North Carolina State.

The Demon Deacons (3-2, 0-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) have used redshirt junior Cory Randolph and redshirt freshman Ben Mauk this season. Randolph has started the past 17 games and is probably more of an explosive runner. Mauk was a highly regarded recruit out of Ohio who is regarded as the better passer.

Mauk directed scoring drives of 67 and 80 yards in the N.C. State loss, but it was Randolph who played in the overtime.

Grobe said Randolph is the starter as of Tuesday for this weekend's game against Virginia Tech. How much Mauk plays will depend on the flow of the game and other factors.

``I really could care less who plays,'' Grobe said. ``Both of these guys are good kids, and both of them are good players. I know some people say you pick a quarterback and you stay with him, but I think that's really unfair if you've got (another) guy with some ability.

``We've got controversies at a lot of positions,'' he said. ``It's not just at the quarterback spot where guys are competing very hard.''

Running back Chris Barclay said both Randolph and Mauk are capable of leading the Demon Deacons' offense.

``They are very good quarterbacks and are both leaders in the huddle,'' Barclay said. ``They take control of the football game and make good decisions for the most part, so there's no drop off from one to other.''

One of Randolph's biggest attributes is he doesn't make a lot of mistakes. He has just two interceptions in his last 160 passing attempts over the last 10 games going back to last season.

But when Grobe was asked who did the better job in the loss to the Wolfpack, he was vague in his answer.

``It all depends what area you are looking at,'' Grobe said. ``If you are looking at just completions, Ben has a little bit of an edge but Cory hit some receivers who dropped balls ... I think overall if you throw everything into the pot and mix it up we've got two guys that are competing well and both deserve playing time.''

Grobe said that for the most part he hasn't heard from others outside of the program about who should be playing more.

``The only person who is not afraid to talk about it is my wife, Holly, and she loves both Ben and Cory so she's not giving me one way or the other,'' Grobe said. ``She'd like to see both of them play 50-50 and both throw for 500 yards a game.''
