FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Carlos Ousley, Arkansas' third-leading receiver, said Thursday that he quit on Tuesday because the Razorback coaching stuff diminished his role on the team.
``I just got the picture that I really wasn't wanted,'' Ousley said.
Ousley, a junior from Jacksonville, Fla., had nine receptions for 102 yards and played in all five Razorback games this season. He also lost one yard returning three punts and threw a 34-yard touchdown pass against No. 5 Texas on a trick play.
Ousley said receivers coach James Shibest agreed that the player wasn't given many opportunities to make plays and told him the demotion was not Ousley's fault.
``But, hey, you know, you're still going to lose your starting spot,'' Ousley said. ``That's just like a slap in the face, and I didn't even want to be a part of that anymore. I wasn't trying to be a distraction. I was just trying to get out of there and let them play the guys who they wanted to play.''
Nutt said Ousley asked for and was granted a release from his scholarship. The request came after a new depth chart by Nutt moved senior receiver Steven Harris to flanker, Ousley's position, and freshman Marcus Monk to split end. On Thursday, Nutt said that he did not want to respond to Ousley's comments and told assistant coaches not to either. Shibest refused comment as well.
``It was obvious after the meeting that if I'm losing my starting spot and you weren't throwing me the ball when I was starting what makes you think you're going to actually try to get me the ball coming off the bench,'' Ousley said.
Ousley said he plans to finish this semester at Arkansas and then return to Florida to sort out his future. He said he did not know if he would play football again.

Ousley would be able to play one more year of college football, but he would be limited to a transfer to an NCAA Division I-AA or Division II school to play next season.

Ousley had initially signed with Wake Forest but transferred to Arkansas because he could not wear dreadlocks at the North Carolina school. He was a redshirt in 2001 for Arkansas, and a backup the two years following. In 2002 and 2003, he had five catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns.
Ousley didn't have a catch in a 45-30 loss at Florida and fumbled a punt return, recovering it for a 5-yard loss.
