Concluding a postgame prayer, Warner Robins coach Bryan Way raised his right arm with his index finger outstretched. Immediately Way was surrounded in a celebration by 90 of his players, who also raised their arms and gave a hearty cheer.
The gesture capped a great victory over a great opponent. A No. 1 opponent.
Mark Wright scored from two yards out on a quarterback bootleg with 2:07 remaining as Warner Robins ended a three-year losing streak against rival Northside-Warner Robins with a 10-3 win.
``Three years of whuppings. Three years,'' Warner Robins defensive back Antonio Holley said after batting down a pass on Northside's last play. ``We finally got that payback. I'll always remember this.''
If Warner Robins (8-0-1) wins next week game against Henry County, the Demons will claim their first region championship since 2000.
Warner Robins managed 224 yards of total offense, about 160 yards below its average. But the Demons' defense was even better as it held Northside to 179 yards. More importantly, Warner Robins forced four turnovers. The Demons intercepted Northside (8-1) quarterback Jacobi Rodriguez three times.
A run by running back Alton Sanders and a couple carries by fullback Kyle Hicks set up the Wright winning score. Wright faked to Sanders and kept the ball on his hip for the 2-yard run.
``They did a great job of selling the fake,'' Wright said. ``The line, the backs. All I had to do was walk into the end zone.''
