NORFOLK, VIRGINIA - Baseball's search for a home for the Montreal Expos has expanded to southeastern Virginia.
A baseball delegation met with Norfolk city officials and a group representing unidentified investors Monday.
The Hampton Roads area, which includes Norfolk and Virginia Beach, is one of the nation's largest metropolitan areas without a major sports franchise. It's also not far from the state capital of Richmond.
The Expos are owned by the other 29 major league teams. They may relocate next year, but baseball wants funding in place for a new ballpark before picking a new home for the team.
Other candidates interested the team are Monterrey, Mexico; Northern Virginia; Portland, Oregon; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Washington, D.C.
Las Vegas and San Antonio also may be candidates.
