HELEN - The congregation at Union Baptist Church in Helen is preparing to celebrate the church's 125th anniversary this weekend.
The church was established on February 2nd, 1879. Captain James H. Nichols, who came to the area after the Civil War, donated the land located on highway 356 just north of Unicoi State Park. Nichols also donated land for Crescent Hill Baptist Church, which was originally a Presbyterian Church, and Bean Creek Baptist Church. He insisted the land be used as church property or he or his heirs would take it back.
Union Baptist Church will celebrate the anniversary during the Sunday morning service. Area missionary, Rev. Doug Merck will speak and a covered dish supper will follow the service. Former pastors and members are encouraged to attend the celebration.
