Seminoles second straight ACC win Saturday against Maryland

By
TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA - Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen would like to beat Florida State, just once anyway.

After tripping last week at Northern Illinois, Friedgen hopes to get his Terrapins upright against a team they've never defeated.

No. 11 Florida State (1-0, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) is a perfect 13-0 against the Terrapins, including relatively easy wins over Friedgen-coached teams the past two seasons.

``Anytime anybody beats Florida State, it's a big win for their program,'' Friedgen said.

Although the Terps began the season ranked No. 15, they dropped out of the poll after losing 20-13 at Northern Illinois in their opener.

``Our team has a lot of belief in itself, even after last week,'' Friedgen said. ``It might have been what we needed ... a wake-up call.''

Maryland is the lone school other than Florida State to win the ACC since 1991 with a title in 2001 when the Terrapins still lost to the Seminoles.

In his first two seasons, Friedgen has led Maryland to a 21-6 record, an ACC title, and the first back-to-back 10-win seasons in school history.

``There's a problem getting there and there's a problem staying there,'' he said, noting Florida State is the one ACC program that has.

``Sometimes you forget what got you there,'' he said. ``I think we're going through a little of that right now.''

While Friedgen is trying to get his program to that point, Florida State is trying to get back into national title contention.

After enjoying a dynastic run of 10-win seasons and top-four finishes through four presidencies, the Seminoles tumbled into mortality in 2001 with an 8-4 record and runner-up finish behind Maryland in the ACC. Last year, despite an ACC title and Sugar Bowl appearance, the record was 9-5.

Florida State, however, served notice last week with a 37-0 win at North Carolina that is may be once again jelling into a national contender.

The offense produced 553 yards (317 passing, 236 running) while the senior-led defense checked the Tar Heels with 295 yards, including only 72 on the ground.

``I'm amazed at the number of players they have and the number of players they play,'' Friedgen said. ``And they're all pretty good. That's what's scary.''

Four Florida State tailbacks produced 232 of the yards while averaging eight yards an attempt with freshman Lorenzo Booker leading the way with 87 yards on eight carries.

One of the tailbacks, Leon Washington who also is a top special teams player dislocated an elbow in the opener and will likely miss several weeks.

Maryland a team with 15 senior starters managed only 222 yards offense in its loss to Northern Illinois while giving up 325 yards.

``You don't base the season on one game,'' he said. ``As far as I'm concerned, I'll put Northern Illinois behind us.''

The Terps' task in Tallahassee will be made more difficult for Maryland by the loss of its top offensive lineman, 318-pound senior guard Lamar Bryant, who is out with a broken foot.

``We know it's a tough situation,'' Friedgen said. ``I've never played a game where I didn't expect to win. I expect my team feels the same way.''

Although Florida State has scored at least 45 points a game in each of its six previous homefield victories over Maryland, coach Bobby Bowden expects the Terrapins will be ready.

``They'll be focused,'' he said. ``Because they're playing Florida State.''
