TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA - Alabama head coach Mark Gottfried, who took the Crimson Tide to the NCAA tournament the last two years, had his contract extended five years, university officials announced Friday.
The contract approved by the university's board of trustees is for five years and rolls over for an additional year if Gottfried gets 19 wins this season, university officials said.
Gottfried's base salary is $150,000 and he received a talent fee for radio and television obligations, bringing his annual salary to $800,000 plus incentives.
``Not only are we making the NCAA tournament, but our players are graduating,'' said Alabama Director of Athletics Mal Moore in a statement. ``There's an aura of excitement around the program and attendance continues to be on the rise.''
Gottfried, hired in March 1998, has taken the Crimson Tide to four postseason appearances, including back-to-back NCAA trips in 2002 and 2003. Alabama won the NIT championship game in 2001.
Alabama won the 2002 Southeastern Conference regular season championship and advanced to the SEC tournament's championship game. In that year, Gottfried coached SEC Player of the Year Erwin Dudley.
The same year Gottfried was named SEC Coach of the Year and Mo Williams Freshman of the Year.
All of Gottfried's senior players in the last four years have graduated and Alabama players have won 15 Academic All-SEC awards since 1999.
