SAVANNAH - Monte Anthony raced 50 yards for the game's only touchdown midway through the first quarter and it was enough to give Norfolk State a 7-3 victory over Savannah State Saturday night.

The Spartans (1-1) lost an opportunity to added another Anthony score in the third quarter, but the speedy freshman's apparent 17-yard scoring run was nullfied by a holding penalty.

Savannah State (0-3) got its only scor on a 28-yard field goal by Kyle McCrery in the third quarter.

The field goal was set up by Ontreal Bowers' 28-yard run and a 27-yard pass from Clyde Tullis to Khalil Hasan that gave the Tigers a first down on the Norfolk 8. Three inside runs and a delay of game penalty put the Tigers on the 12, forcing them to go for the field goal.

The Spartans got inside the Savannah State 10 twice in the second quarter, but failed to score.
