Today we finally quantified what we have known intuitively for a long time. According to FAIR, education of illegal immigrants is costing $7.4 billion dollars a year (2.2 billion in California). For most states, my home state of Georgia included, it amounts to enough to wipe out the spending shortfalls in those states. The two areas that we cannot control the cost of as it relates to illegal immigration is education and health care. Americans are not going to allow a child to go without health care or an education--but this question is at what cost.
Mark Krikorian from the Center for Immigration Studies, commented that we have improved the border enforcement but have not made any progress in the enforcement of immigration law inside the country. We need a policy that allows small amounts of immigration (500,000) a year that is very immigrant friendly with English classes and civics education instead of what we have--an immmigration rate that is too large and hard to measure and is very unfriendly to the immigrants in the system.(check out www.marthazoller.com for an audio clip of that interview.)
It means something to be an American and we must ensure in the post 9/11 world that people consciously come to America under strict scrutiny with the intentions of being Americans.
