MIAMI - An electronic device used for many years to monitor ordinary criminals is being tested on illegal immigrants awaiting their day in court.
As many as 100 illegal immigrants will be released from jail in Florida if they wear the electronic ankle bracelets. A spokeswoman says the monitoring devices are being assigned to ``low-risk, nonviolent alien offenders.''
One immigrant says he doesn't really want to wear the bracelet for even an hour. But he can now leave his home for five hours a day -- and he says it's better than being in custody. He'd been in prison for two months.
Some state immigrant advocates have criticized the program. One calls the bracelets an unnecessary security measure for those who've simply come to the United States seeking asylum.
