STARKVILLE, MISSISSIPPI - Mississippi State is awaiting an NCAA ruling on defensive lineman Kamau Jackson, who is being held out of practice by the Bulldogs while the NCAA decides whether to grant him another year of eligibility.

Also, the Bulldogs will be without three members of their 2003 freshman class who failed to meet academic requirements.

Jackson enrolled at Mississippi State in 2001 after attending Copiah-Lincoln Community College. He played just one game during his first season at Co-Lin before dropping out of school for personal reasons related to his family. The Decatur, Ga., native returned to Co-Lin the next year and played the entire season.
Both Jackson and Mississippi State thought he had three years of eligibility left when he signed with the Bulldogs.

The NCAA informed Jackson that he was out of eligibility last spring. Mississippi State appealed, but has yet to hear back from the NCAA.

``There have been a couple of hardship cases in the past with a couple of basketball players, so hopefully we can get him in camp,'' Bulldogs coach Jackie Sherrill said.

Jackson played in 12 games last season, starting six. He had 47 tackles and a sack. He is listed as a starter on the team's depth chart at defensive tackle.

The Bulldogs are also waiting for the NCAA Clearinghouse to clear freshman defensive back Rickey Wright for participation.

Wide receiver Akeem Lofton and defensive linemen Sandy Quinn and Rex Hill didn't make the grades to meet freshman eligibility and won't be suiting up for the Bulldogs this season.
Lofton has enrolled at Jones County Community College. Quinn will attend Hinds Community College. Hill has not signed with a junior college.
