CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA - North Carolina defensive tackle Donti Coats has received a medical hardship and will no longer play football, the school announced Tuesday. <br>

Coats, a rising senior from Chesapeake, Va., had suffered injuries to his right ankle in each of the last three seasons. <br>

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound lineman had 25 tackles in 11 games last season, starting three. <br>

Coats is expected to graduate in December, coach John Bunting said.
