MINNEAPOLIS - Former U.S. Olympic and NHL head coach Herb Brooks has been killed in a car accident. A Minnesota state government source confirms that Brooks died Monday afternoon in a single vehicle rollover at a highway intersection north of the Twin Cities. <br>

He was 66. <br>

Brooks coached the 1980 ``Miracle on Ice'' Olympic team that won the gold medal after defeating the Soviet Union in the semifinals in Lake Placid, New York. He returned to lead the 2002 U-S Olympic hockey team to a silver medal. <br>

He also coached the University of Minnesota to three national titles while behind the Golden Gophers' bench from 1972 to 1979. Brooks coached in the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars, the New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils and the Pittsburgh Penguins. <br>

He was inducted into the U.S Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.
