Hockey coach Herb Brooks killed in car accident

MINNEAPOLIS - Former U.S. Olympic and NHL head coach Herb Brooks has been killed in a car accident. A Minnesota state government source confirms that Brooks died Monday afternoon in a single vehicle rollover at a highway intersection north of the Twin Cities. <br> <br> He was 66. <br> <br> Brooks coached the 1980 ``Miracle on Ice&#39;&#39; Olympic team that won the gold medal after defeating the Soviet Union in the semifinals in Lake Placid, New York. He returned to lead the 2002 U-S Olympic hockey team to a silver medal. <br> <br> He also coached the University of Minnesota to three national titles while behind the Golden Gophers&#39; bench from 1972 to 1979. Brooks coached in the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars, the New York Rangers, the New Jersey Devils and the Pittsburgh Penguins. <br> <br> He was inducted into the U.S Hockey Hall of Fame in 1990.
