Dacula mom goes to jail

By
LAWRENCEVILLE - A former Gwinnett County teacher from Dacula who took her children to the Cayman Islands in defiance of a custody order begins a three-day stay in jail Tuesday.

Joyce Williams took the children days after ex-husband Jeff Weeks was awarded custody in October 2000. Nine-year-old Emily and eight-year-old Jeffrey returned to Georgia on March 20th.

Williams apologized for running away with her children during a two-hour hearing Monday in Gwinnett Superior Court. She told Judge Debra K. Turner that she was worried Weeks would hurt the children when they visited him.

The children were found in Georgetown in the Cayman Islands in February after someone saw a Gwinnett Daily Post article on the Internet and called in a tip to police.

A judge there ruled the children had to return to the United States to be with their father.
