Minor league hockey team will stay in Macon

By
MACON - The Macon Trax, an independent minor league hockey team, will stay in Macon despite an earlier announcement that the team would move to Lakeland, Fla.

The City Council approved a revised lease Tuesday after weeks of negotiations between Mayor Jack Ellis and Trax owner David Waronker.

Waronker, a Florida businessman, had decided in May to rename the team the Loggerheads and move to Lakeland, but he changed his mind after recent negotiations with the city.

The Trax will play in the World Hockey Association 2 that starts its season in October.

``I'm going to give it my best shot,'' Waronker said. ``A lot of smaller cities can't support hockey on its own. But we'll have the league behind it. We have a national corporate sales director. That's what is going to help us make it.''

Financial terms were not available, but the Trax must average 1,100 fans a game to renew the contract. If the team fails to reach that figure, either the city or the team has the option to end the lease.
