100 turn out for Athens commuter rail hearing

By
ATHENS - The second of three public hearings about a proposed commuter rail line from Atlanta to Athens will be held Tuesday at Emory University.

Monday more than 100 people attended a hearing in Athens. Most of the people who spoke out seemed more concerned about when the line might start than what the enviromental impacts might be.

Elected officials from locations along the line were among those attending the hearing.

The proposed line would carry commuters from Athens, Bogart and several other stops along a 72-mile route to Atlanta during morning runs, then bring them back in the evenings on tracks that would be shared with freight trains. An environmental study required by the federal government shows the plan would have minor environmental impact. That's mainly because the trains would run on a line that already exists between Athens and Atlanta.
