MONTREAL - Atlanta Braves second baseman Marcus Giles doubled in his first four at-bats Sunday, tying major league records for doubles in a game and consecutive doubles in one game.
Giles doubled off the top of the center-field wall in the first, hit an RBI double to center in the second and a hard grounder past Montreal Expos third baseman Jose Macias in the fourth.
Giles hit his second RBI double in the fifth on a drive to the left-field corner, becoming the first NL player to hit four consecutive doubles in a game since Chicago's Billy Williams on April 9, 1969.
All four doubles came off Expos starter Tomo Ohka. Giles, who leads the team with 35 doubles this season, struck out in the seventh against Julio Manon.
It is the 43rd time in major league history a player has hit four doubles in a game, and the first time in the NL since Houston's Jeff Bagwell did it on June 14, 1996.
Kansas City's Johnny Damon and Toronto's Shannon Stewart each hit four doubles on July 18, 2000, the last time the feat was accomplished in the AL.
