SUGAR HILL - The truck driver involved in a wreck that killed a 14-year-old Powder Springs girl faces charges of vehicular homicide, Gwinnett County police said.
Courtney Ellis, 19, of Auburn, Ala. was driving a commercial truck westbound on Ga. 20 Sunday when he lost control, crossing into oncoming traffic. He struck a Ford Excursion carrying seven people on their way to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for a family vacation.
Both vehicles left the road the truck ran down a ravine, and the sports utility vehicle hit a tree and flipped over, killing Sarah Holt and injuring the other six passengers.
There was no evidence that Ellis was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but police plan to charge him with misdemeanor vehicular homicide because he broke traffic laws in the crash, said Gwinnett police Cpl. Dan Huggins.
``We have to wait for the drug and alcohol test results to come back to determine the severity of the charges,'' Huggins said.
Officials said six others in the SUV, including Sarah's parents, were taken to area hospitals. Ellis also was seriously injured.
