NE Georiga man gets 5+ years for weapons violations

MACON - A 45-year-old Elberton man was sentenced Wednesday to more than five years in prison on federal firearms charges which were filed against him last July.

Greg Giannoni pleaded guilty in April to stockpiling hundreds of grenades in his home.

A federal judge in Macon ordered Giannoni to prison for 63 months, fined him $12,500, and put him on three years of supervised release once he's out of prison.

The ATF says a raid on Giannoni's home last July turned up black powder, fuse components, and more than 600 grenade hulls - enough material to assemble 805 grenades.

Giannoni pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Macon April 2 to possession of unregistered firearms. He had faced a maximum of 10 years in prison.

Agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms raided Giannoni's home with Elberton authorities last July.

Giannoni's attorney, Athens lawyer Ed Tolley, told a federal magistrate last year that his client had hoped to sell survival kits containing the grenades to the military.
