Mexican ID card under scrutiny

By by Ken Stanford
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Treasury Department plans to review government rules regarding an identification card issue by the Mexican government to its overseas nationals - both legal and illegal immigrants.

At issue, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, is the "matricular consular" card, which is increasingly being accepted for indentification purposes by banks across the country including Georgia.

Some members of Congress are demanding that the Department of Homeland Security and the Treasury Department review the existing policy which leaves it to the banks to decide what documents they will accept as valid ID to do business.

Congressman James Sensenbrenner, Junior, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, says the cards "are neither reliable nor secure."

Vanessa Gonzalez, communications director of the Hispanic Caucus, calls the move in Washington "anti-Hispanic."

Among the banks in Georgia that accept the cards are Wachovia, Bank of America, and SunTrust. All have branches in Gainesville.
