GAINESVILLE - In sports, Hall County school officials Tuesday that East Hall High School plans to drop to Class AA beginning with the 2004-2005 school year.

East Hall now competes in Region 7-AAA in the so-called "Super Hall" region with the other public high schools in Hall County.

Speculation has East Hall competing in Region 8-AA starting in 2004, but that cannot be made official until later this week at the earliest following a Georgia High School Association committee meeting at which classifications for the 2004-2005 school year are expected to be approved.

East Hall is moving to AA because of the enrollment forumula GHSA using in determining what classification a school will be placed in, according to Hall County Schools System spokesman Gordon Higgins.

"The GHSA, which does all the classifcations on a two-year cycle, developed
new percentages for the next cycle, which begins with the 2004-05 school
year," said HIggins. "All classes--AAAAA, AAAA, AAA, AA, A--are based on enrollment figures pulled from official state DOE (Department of Education) reports. The top 15% in enrollment are AAAAA, the next 21% are AAAA, the next 21% are AAA, the next 21% AA, and the final 22% A."

Higgins said when GHSA ran the state numbers with this formula, EHHS had AA enrollment numbers. "All the other schools still fell into AAA numbers," he added.

Therefore, no other schools in the Hall County and Gainesville school systems are expected to change classifications or regions.
