ATHENS - Georgia football legend Herschel Walker said he's resigning from fund-raising for the school in protest of longtime athletic director Vince Dooley's forced retirement.
Walker is the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner and star running back on Dooley's 1980 national championship team.
Walker said he's quitting the Archway to Excellence steering committee, which is trying to raise $500 million for the school.
Walker was the only athlete on the 12-member committee. He says Dooley recruited him for the committee about a year ago.
Dooley's request for a contract extension was rejected by school President Michael Adams on Thursday. Adams has feuded with Dooley often since coming to the school in 1997.
He insisted they stick to a deal reached in 2001 that will end Dooley's 25-year reign as athletic director June 30th, 2004.
