Former Georgia coach could land at Marshall

By
CHARLESTON, WEST VIRGINIA - Tulane men's basketball coach Shawn Finney has withdrawn his name from the search for the coaching vacancy at Marshall.

Finney's decision could open the door for former Georgia coach Ron Jirsa to land the job.

Finney, considered the front-runner for the job, is the second coach in two days to pull out of contention for the Marshall job, the only remaining Division One vacancy. Former Ohio University coach Larry Hunter withdrew yesterday.

Finney, a native of Mullens, called the decision ``gut-wrenching'' but says he's happy in New Orleans and plans to continue building the Green Wave program.

He says he discussed some circumstances with Marshall Athletic Director Bob Marcum, but wasn't formally offered the job.

Meanwhile, Marcum says an unidentified candidate has emerged in the search to replace Greg White. The Herald-Dispatch of Huntington, West Virginia, is reporting that the mystery candidate could be Jirsa, who couldn't be reached for comment.
