An item came out in the news the other day about the Georgia Lottery. According to this scientific study from the University of Georgia, most of the people who play the Lottery are less educated and are less financially able to spend money playing the lottery than others. And ... most of the people who do not play the lottery are better educated and more financially able to toss some money in the lottery.
At the same time, the families who take advantage of the Hope Scholarships, which are funded by the Lottery, tend to be well educated and more financially able to send their children to college. While the families who do not attempt to take advantage ... anyway, you get the picture that this scientific study revealed.
Now, what amazes me about this study is not the results. There were plenty of studies available before the Georgia Lottery was adopted by our State Government that showed a lottery would be popular with the poorer among us, and that financial assistance for college would be more popular with the better educated and well-to-do. But even without the studies, common sense would tell you that.
What amazes me is that somebody paid somebody else good money to do such a study in the first place. And since we're in a gambling mood, I'll bet you a dime to a doughnut nobody pays any attention to it. Do you reckon any of our tax money was involved in all that?
This is Gordon Sawyer, and may the wind always be at you're back.
