WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. - Randy Pobst of Gainesville and Michael Levitas won Saturday's Grand-Am Cup Grand Sports race after an exiting duel with Darren Law and Chris Dyson in a battle of Porsches.
Pobst passed Law in turn one with only three laps remaining in the three-hour event, and went on to win by .768 seconds.
"We guessed right on tires early in the race, and Michael Levitas gave me a one-minute lead," Pobst explained. "We were the only team to start the race on dry tires. I guessed wrong when I went out, and I had to pit late in the race to put on rain tires. That put me eighth in line, but I was able to come back. I caught a big group on a restart, and moved from third to first in the final six laps."
Andy Lally and Michael Schrom finished third in a Porsche.
Brett Shanaman, a former marketing intern at Watkins Glen International, joined Michael Baughman in winning the Grand Sports II class in a Pontiac Firebird, followed by the Porsche of Joe and Wayne Nonnamaker.
In other action Saturday, Canadian Marc-Antoine Camirand won the 10-lap Fran-Am race by seven-tenths of a second over Andrew Ranger. Charles Hall finished third.
