SEA ISLAND - Anna Kournikova has advanced to the second round of her first tennis tournament since an injury a month ago. Kournikova beat Maria Fernanda Alves 4-6, 6-4, 3-0 Wednesday in the opening round of the Cloister Cup at Sea Island.<br>

Alves retired after suffering a left thigh injury in the third set.<br>

Kournikova tore her left abductor muscle April ninth at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston. <br>

Her appearance in the United States Tennis Association Pro Circuit event at Sea Island is part of her preparation for the French Open later this month.<br>

She will play Gabriela Volekova in the second round at Sea Island.
