JEFFERSON - Jefferson led Class A after the first day of the GHSA Boys Track and Field State Championships, thanks to firsts from long jumper Courtney Wiley and high jumper Johnny Quiggley.

Eddie Robertson and Rashawn Robinson placed second and third in the long and triple jumps to lead Americus to the lead in AA with 34 points.

For the most part, the wide bodies dominated the first day.

The only running event contested was the 1600-meter run, which got off to a rough start. The first race was started twice because of an equipment malfunction, and the second race was started twice when a runner fell down in the first 100 yards.

The Class A race ended in a dead heat between Alex Hubbard of Tallulah Falls and Blake Fertitta of Landmark Christian, both timed in 4:35.885. Fertitta led the last half mile before Hubbard made a desperate lunge at the finish for the tie.

David Herren of Rome had the fastest time of the meet, winning the AAAA race in 4:17.46.
