No new jail in Barrow County - yet

By by Robin Banks
WINDER - Barrow County Commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to relocate a proposed work release program to downtown Winder instead of build a new jail.

Commissioners did decide to extend the option of buying the 155-acres off of Pearl Pentecost Road and Highway 211 for another 15 days.

One of the reasons for the delay is the soil needs to be tested on the site and it won't be completed by May 25th as originally planned because of the rain.

The work release program will be built on two acres and contain up to 100 beds.

Some residents near the proposed site have voiced concerns about their safety.
