TIFTON - Police say Green Bay Packers defensive end Joe Johnson was charged with marijuana possession after a deputy saw his car stopped in a turning lane of U.S. 319 in Tifton.
Sheriff's Captain Bobby Brannen said Johnson, of St. Louis, posted a $1,725 cash bond and was released from the Tift County Jail at 11:40 a.m. Thursday.
Deputy David Hardy said he saw the 30-year-old Johnson's silver Mercedes, with hazard lights flashing, stopped on the road, and as he approached Johnson got out and met him at the rear of the car. He told the deputy he needed directions to Tallahassee, Florida. Hardy said he smelled marijuana smoke, searched the vehicle and found what was believed to be a misdemeanor amount of marijuana.
Johnson signed with the Packers in March 2002 as an unrestricted free agent. He played in just five games last season after being injured in a game against the Chicago Bears and missed Green Bay's minicamp earlier this month after having triceps surgery.
Johnson's agent, Roosevelt Barnes, did not immediately return a telephone call from The Associated Press Thursday night seeking comment.
Packers spokesman Lee Remmel said the team was aware of the report from Georgia but had no other comment.
