In July 2000, 55-year-old Alhaji Mohammed was found dead at his auto parts store on Chicago's South Side. Prosecutors say Walter Hughes beat Mohammed to death in a dispute over money. A Cook County jury convicted Hughes of first-degree murder and armed robbery in April.
Cook County Judge Stanley Sacks sentenced Hughes Thursday to 42 years for Mohammed's murder and ten years for the armed robbery. The sentences will run concurrently.
