ATHENS - Five University of Georgia football players were suspended for two games Tuesday and face other punishment after they and a basketball player were charged with violating the Georgia Controlled Substance Act.
Football players Tim Jennings, Orangeburg, S.C.; Bryan McClendon, Atlanta; DeMario Minter, Stone Mountain; Mario Raley, Charlotte, N.C.; Randall Swoopes, Athens and basketball player Wayne Arnold, Lilburn - all freshmen - were charged with misdemeanor possession, the university said.
It did not identify the substance involved but said the charges resulted from a response by campus police to the McWhorter Hall dormitory where many athletes live Thursday night. All were released on bail from the Clarke County jail.
Football coach Mark Richt suspended the five players for the first two games of next season. He ordered them to perform 30 hours of community service, and to participate in internal discipline consisting of unspecified additional physical activity, and required counseling.
Basketball coach Dennis Felton was out of state on a recruiting trip but released a statement saying he would determine what action to take against Arnold after he returns.
