KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA - Donzell McDonald -- a nonroster invitee to spring training by the Atlanta Braves -- can hardly improve on his start.

In 18 games -- mostly in reserve duty -- the outfielder is hitting .387 with two doubles and three RBIs. And he has two of Atlanta's seven steals.

Not bad for a guy who signed a minor league deal in December. McDonald is 5-for-25 in his career in 15 big league games with the New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals.

The same goes for Mike Hessman -- another longshot to make the team. He's batting .370 in 21 games, with one homer and six RBIs. He's seen action at first base and third. This is the first major-league camp for the 25-year-old Hessman, who expects to start the season at AAA Richmond.
But Manager Bobby Cox normally relies on veterans to fill out his bench, leaving McDonald and Hessman with slim chances to make the team.
