South Georgia Waves to move from Albany to Columbus for 2003 season

By
ALBANY - The South Atlantic League has voted to allow the South Georgia Waves to move from Albany to Columbus in time for the upcoming 2003 season.

League president John H. Moss says league owners and the board of directors approved the move Monday.

Columbus will be a one-season stopover for the team. Waves owner David Heller announced last week that he will move the team to Evansville, Indiana, for the 2004 season.

The Waves -- Class A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers -- came to Albany from Wilmington, North Carolina, last year.

Heller says he decided to leave Albany because he could not agree to a lease with the city.

The Waves will open the season at home against the Rome Braves on April seventh. The team will use Golden Park, which became vacant when the Columbus Red Stixx moved to East Lake, Ohio, after last season.
