CARTERSVILLE - Motorists in Dawson and Pickens counties are having to deal with a detour because of a sinkhole on State Route 53 east of Tate - the second in that area in about a week.
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) says the detour will be necessary while geological tests are conducted in an effort to detect any other problems in the road bed.
Mohamed Arafa, District Communications Officer in Cartersville, says "We noticed this stretch of the highway has a lot of limestone and it seems that is is unstable."
Arafa says the latest problem was discovered Sunday on the shoulder of the road about 100 yards from where a sinkhole took out part of one lane about a week earlier.
The 10-mile detour, which is expected to be necessary for about two weeks, routes motorists, both eastbound and westbound, onto State Routes 183, 136, and 515 between Tate and Dawsonville.
