DORAVILLE - General Motors is announcing plans Monday to put $150 million into its manufacturing operations in Doraville to ready its plant to build midsize vans.
The retooling will enable the plant to keep its 3,600 employees.
Slow auto sales and a sagging economy have forced GM to cut back on production at some plants around the country and idle hundreds of workers. At the same time the company has invested millions to produce new vehicles it hopes will catch on with consumers.
Five new dye lines will be installed in the metal stamping plant for future products.
The plant will begin producing four brands of midsize vans in 2005, including Chevrolet and Pontiac -- and for the first time, Buick and Saturn.
The plant now produces the Chevrolet Venture, Pontiac Montana and the Oldsmobile Silouette.
The plant opened in 1947.
