While I admit the main thing I love about the Super Bowl is the commercials, I do love an excuse for a party. I have hosted a few football gatherings, and for me, it is all about the food. I conducted several informal polls with various friends and family members about game-food preferences. The male responses were fairly typical and testosterone laced-anything is fine, as long as it does not require the use of a fork and knife, and most importantly, it must go well with beer. The women I spoke with said they prefer simple things. Nobody wants to be in the kitchen cooking, while the rest of the party is watching the game. The most requested game food included nachos, wings, pizza, cheese dip, and chili-dogs. Basically anything with artery-clogging properties.
These are a few of my family's favorite recipes--and any time I serve these dishes to friends, I end up handing out recipes. The cheese dip echoes the kind from Mexican restaurants, but is infinitely better. Melt everything in the microwave, then transfer to a medium-sized slow cooker to keep it warm during the game--if it lasts that long. My brood usually hovers over the dip, arguing about who is double-dipping, until the cheese dip is gone. The wings are best if marinated for several days, but even overnight will yield good results. The boiled peanuts should be made the day before, so they can spend a night soaking in the salty brine. I promise, beer will go well with all these snacks!
