SECAUCUS, NEW JERSEY - MetroStars forward Clint Mathis of Conyers, Georgia, had surgery to repair a hernia Tuesday. <br>

Mathis, who has been captain of the U.S. soccer team in recent games, is expected to be sidelined for about one month. <br>

The MetroStars, who open the season April 12, sent Mathis to see Doctor Richard Cattey in Milwaukee after he reported discomfort during preseason training in Florida. <br>

The U.S. team's next game is March 29 against Japan in Seattle.
