ATLANTA - The Atlanta Regional Commission approved a resolution Wednesday to explore a range of new funding sources for transportation, including toll roads or increasing the gas tax or sales taxes for Gwinnett, Forsyth and other metro Atlanta counties.
ARC Chairman Crandle Bray told the commission that passage of the resolution means the commission will work as a team to explore new regional strategies for future funding of transportation solutions.
Reducing pollution is as important as unsnarling traffic congestion. Metro Atlanta must continue progress toward reducing air pollution. Otherwise, federal highway officials could revoke the funds, as they did in 1998.
A key to solving pollution and traffic problems is maintaining and expanding regional access to mass transit. Part of the regional tax would go toward that.
